Canal Street News Launches Journalism Club Geared Toward High School and College-Aged Students
The lower Manhattan news site calls for applications from local area residents and workers for its media mentorship program launching June 15.
Calling all lower Manhattan storytellers: Join the Canal Street News Journalism Club starting June 15, 2020!
Over the course of two months, accepted club members will learn firsthand the fundamentals of ethical journalism, creative nonfiction, publishing best practices, social media sharing, search engine optimization (SEO), content management systems (CMS), web design, photography basics, video tips and Associated Press (AP) Style. Each person will work to produce and publish three stories for the digital news site based on their own interests. The club will also discuss interview techniques, how to approach sources, freelance writing and the general art of storytelling.
Canal Street News Journalism Club is intended for high school and college-aged students, though it is open to aspiring journalists ranging from ages 16 to 116 who live or work in lower Manhattan. Hopeful applicants do not need prior experience—only a passion for pursuing the truth. Devices such as a computer, camera and phone are helpful, but an inability to access technology should not prohibit anyone from applying. We will work with your situation as needed. Those looking to improve their writing in English are encouraged. The free summer 2020 club will be led by Canal Street News reporter and editor Alexandria Misch.
TO APPLY: Please fill out the form below or send an email to canalstnews@gmail.com with the subject line “SUMMER JOURNALISM CLUB” and a bio (a few sentences about yourself) along with five potential story ideas you would like to pursue.
